Stump Grinding

A tree comes down and the stump stays behind. We grind it out, down to roughly twelve inches below grade, so the ground is actually usable again.

Chapter 01

What a left stump turns into

A fresh stump looks harmless sitting in a Houston yard, and most people leave it there meaning to deal with it later. Later is where the trouble starts. A rotting stump is exactly what termites and carpenter ants are looking for, and once they have set up in the wood, the colony does not stay put. It works outward toward the fence line, a shed, or the house itself, which turns a leftover stump into a pest problem nobody budgeted for.

There is a second, more ordinary cost. A stump at grade catches a mower blade, trips a kid running through the yard, and sits square in the middle of whatever you actually wanted to do with that patch of ground. Left long enough, some species send up new shoots around the base and try to grow back as a cluster of suckers instead of the one tree you removed.

Twelve inches below grade

We bring a stump grinder to the site and work the wood down to roughly twelve inches below grade, not just flush with the surface. That depth matters. Grinding flush leaves a solid root mass sitting right under a thin skin of soil, which is exactly what starts breaking through again the following season. Going down to twelve inches clears enough of the root crown that the ground behaves like ground again, not like a tree that is pretending to be gone.

The grinding throws a pile of wood chips, and what happens to them is the customer's call. Some people want them left on site to use as mulch around beds and borders, since it is free material and it is already there. Others would rather we haul it all off the property and leave a clean yard behind. Either way, we walk the site with you first so there is no surprise about where the chips end up.

Chapter 03

What you can do with the ground afterwards

Once the stump and root crown are out of the way, that spot in the yard stops being off limits. Homeowners in Houston and out toward Sugar Land use the cleared ground to put in a new tree in a better spot, roll out sod over it, or extend a patio or a driveway build right through where the old trunk used to sit. Our tree planting crew can take that same footprint and turn it into something new if that is the plan.

If the stump came from a removal we handled, grinding it is a separate step you can schedule whenever you are ready, not something you have to decide on the spot. Call (281) 704-6828 and we will come out for a free estimate on the grind alone, whether the tree came down last week or five years ago.

Part of a bigger job, or just the stump

Stump grinding often follows a tree removal we already did, but plenty of calls come in for a stump that has been sitting in the yard for years, left by a storm or a job someone else did. Either way we come out across Houston, Spring, Cypress and the rest of our service area to grind it flush and haul the chips if you want them gone.
